Why do the sites rankings vary from those seen in the tracker?

Positions can vary from day to day, and even location to location - their results could access a different Google datacentre, whose "results" are not yet synced with others so there is always chance of some variation.
Google also relies more and more on offering local searchers with local results so this can affect search results around the country (especially for geographically oriented search phrases).
